Ubuntu 16.04 VMware image with Tools and MATE desktop

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS nicknamed Xenial Xerus has just arrived. This Xenial VMware image is equipped with the MATE desktop environment, which offers the good old start menu and task panels. VMware Tools are also installed. This is the Ubuntu image you want to have!

The long awaited Xenial Xerus is there and this is the first LTS that comes with MATE officially blessed by Ubuntu. MATE is the successor of the old Gnome 2.0 style desktop. We have virtualized it for you and the outcome is a really speedy VMware image compared with the original Ubuntu and its clunky Unity desktop.

But the best thing is its usability!

There are different looks like Windows, Mac, other Linux desktops, and also Ubuntu Unity that can be activated with a few mouse clicks. (Control Center > Look and Feel > Mate Tweak > Interface > Panels). Currently there is "Redmond" selected, our homage to Bill Gates looking out his Windows.

In all cases only the outer surface changes and mimics other well known desktops. Regarding the workflow MATE still adheres to the principle of one or more panels offering menus for starting programs, navigating to places, or opening documents combined with a task switcher that actually shows which programs are running. If you prefer the new desktop, simply download the standard Ubuntu 16.04 image with VMware Tools.

In order to make the download size of this Ubuntu 16.04 LTS image a bit smaller, we have removed some of the preinstalled applications. You can get them back with starting Synaptic, searching for the following metapackages and installing them.
